About Wingate, New Mexico: A Final Stop Before Arizona
Perched on red-rock mesas twelve miles west of Gallup, Wingate has greeted travelers since the Santa Fe Railway carved its grade through Navajo country in the 1880s. Once the whistle blew, ranchers and traders gathered under the desert sun, and a military post, Fort Wingate, stood guard over the volcanic malpaís to the south. By 1926, America's Mother Road joined the tracks, funneling caravans of Model Ts past stone officers' quarters, adobe trading posts, and roadside stands piled with turquoise jewelry.
For westbound motorists, Wingate was (and still is) a significant milestone: the "Last Village in New Mexico" before the highway ducks under craggy cliffs at Lupton, AZ. Drivers topped off tanks at the Shell station, picked up fry bread and coffee from local vendors, and snapped photos beside the fort's weather-worn bunkers.
After dark, the hum of the desert wind and distant coyote calls signaled a night's rest-or one more push to the neon glow of Winslow just across the border.
Today, the old two-lane alignment (NM 122) still threads through Wingate's quiet cluster of homes, school grounds and historic depots. Empty ammo bunkers pepper the hillsides, freight trains thunder on schedule, and the stony bulwarks of Fort Wingate whisper of cavalry posts and Cold War arsenals. Pause here, breathe in the sage-scented air, and feel the thrill of crossing a state line on one of the world's most legendary roads.
