About Thoreau, New Mexico: A Trading Hub on the Mother Road

Perched at a cool 7,240 feet between volcanic Haystack Mountain and the orange cliffs of Red Mesa, Thoreau began as an Atlantic & Pacific Railroad siding in the 1880s. Navajo herders soon teamed up with merchants to open a string of vibrant trading posts. A notable trading post was Ellis, Pinto, and Richardson: where rugs, silver conchos and wool swapped hands beneath vigas darkened by kerosene lamps.

When Route 66 arrived in 1926, Thoreau blossomed into a welcome oasis for motorists crossing the broad Navajo Nation. Drivers topped off with Ethyl under neon arrows, bought turquoise bracelets for the next leg west and snapped photos of the iconic white hillside cross that still watches over the valley.

During the uranium boom of the 1950s, yellowcake convoys rumbled past the same pumps, feeding America's Atomic Age and filling local cafés with hard-hatted miners.

Today, the old two-lane alignment (NM 122) still threads past shuttered curio shops, weathered Hogan-style motels and the sun-cracked post office that sorts mail for ranches stretching to the horizon.

Detour north and you'll hit Bluewater Lake's emerald waters; turn south and the lava-blasted El Malpaís beckons. Wherever you decide to point your compass, Thoreau stands as a reminder that Route 66 is more than a highway: it's a living ribbon through the Land of the Navajo and the Heart of America.
