About Prewitt, New Mexico: A Roadside Stop on the Navajo Border

Prewitt began as a railroad siding in the early 1900s, named after local rancher Henry Prewitt. The town quickly became known for its trading post, where Navajo herders, Laguna Pueblo farmers, and Route 66 travelers mingled and traded handmade goods, ranging from woven rugs to silver concho belts.

When Route 66 cut through the region in 1926, Prewitt became a beloved stop framed by sandstone cliffs, volcanic cones and the vast grazing lands of the Navajo Nation. Travelers would refuel, shop for Native Art, and take in the endless horizon that stretched toward Window Rock and Gallup's neon glow.

Located just east of today’s I-40 crossing over the Baca/Prewitt Chapter lands, Prewitt remains a symbol of the cultural crossroads that define the American Southwest. Nearby landmarks like Haystack Mountain, Bluewater Lake, and remnants of the uranium mining era add layers of geology, grit, and resilience to this rugged landscape.

Step off the main highway, breathe in the sage-scented desert air, and you’ll understand why so many travelers paused here to take in Navajo country’s panoramic beauty.

Slip on your Prewitt Route 66 tee and carry with you the enduring story of a quiet desert outpost where railroad history, trading-post heritage and Navajo horizons meet beneath the vast New Mexico sky.
