About Wingate, New Mexico: A Military Outpost on the Mother Road

Just east of Gallup, the red sandstone cliffs of western New Mexico shelter the storied grounds of Fort Wingate. Established in 1860 (and moved to its current site in 1868), the fort guarded the frontier, oversaw Navajo resettlement and protected the transcontinental trade routes that shaped the Southwest.

Over the next century, Fort Wingate evolved from frontier garrison to ordnance depot, WWII ammunition range and finally a Cold War storage site. Its bunkers still stand silent among piñon and juniper hills, sentinels of another era.

When Route 66 opened in 1926, motorists slowed to glimpse sentry towers and wooden barracks rising from the desert floor. Families posed beside the massive “WINGATE ARMY DEPOT” sign, bought Navajo rugs from roadside traders or watched supply trains rumble past under the crimson glow of sunset.

Though the fort was decommissioned in the 1990s, its weathered stables, stone blockhouses and earthen berms remain as echoes of Old West discipline and determination. Today, Wingate stands as a gateway to the Zuni Mountains, the cool waters of Bluewater Lake and the sunlit mesas of the Navajo Nation

Drive the old Route 66 alignment (NM 122), feel the desert wind sweeping over volcanic plains, and listen closely: you just might hear a cavalry bugle calling across the red stones.
