About Rehoboth, New Mexico: A Beacon of Hope on the Mother Road

Tucked beneath crimson sandstone bluffs just east of Gallup, Rehoboth was founded in 1903 when members of the Christian Reformed Church established a mission school and hospital to serve the Navajo and Zuni peoples. The community quickly became a place of care and cross-cultural exchange known as Rehoboth Mission School (today Rehoboth Christian School).

The school offered bilingual classrooms and dormitories, while the adjoining mission hospital, now Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services, provided the region's first modern medical care.

When America's Mother Road blazed through in 1926, the mission's white-steepled chapel and tidy campus stood only yards from the two-lane highway. It offered weary motorists gospel services, Navajo-made rugs and a fresh canteen of water before the long haul across the mesas.

Students waved to passing caravans, mission nurses tended to roadside mishaps and Sunday sermons echoed beneath the same red rocks that had guided traders for centuries.

Though Interstate 40 now parallels old Route 66, Rehoboth remains a vital beacon. Its school still educates K-12 students, its hospital serves a diverse high-desert population, and its welcoming sign reminds travelers that kindness and community flourish even in the most remote corners of the Southwest.
