About Halltown, Missouri: The Little Chicago of Route 66
Founded in 1876, Halltown grew into a lively trade center for the surrounding Ozark farming communities. By the time Route 66 opened in 1926, Halltown had earned the nickname "Little Chicago" for its row of busy storefronts, bank, and mercantile businesses that gave the town a bustling energy unusual for its size. Situated along the 1926-1977 alignment of the Mother Road, it became a natural stop for travelers looking for supplies and a taste of small-town life.
Among Halltown's most enduring landmarks is the Whitehall Mercantile, a 1900s-era general store that served as a reminder of the community's commercial heyday. Whitehall Mercantile is now closed. Other once-vital businesses, such as the 1930s Halltown Garage and smaller shops, have also faded into history, but their memory still lingers in the town's identity.
Halltown's charm lies in its blend of past and present. Though quieter than in its "Little Chicago" years, it remains a meaningful stop along Route 66. Its proximity to Springfield - home of the Route 66 Car Museum and the annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival - keeps Halltown tied to the region's larger highway heritage. Today, visitors walk its streets much as travelers did nearly a century ago, discovering that even the smallest towns can leave an outsized mark on the Mother Road and deserve their own t-shirt.
