About Plano, Missouri: The Vanished Stop on Route 66

Plano sits on the 1926–1977 Route 66 route in Greene County, just west of the current I-44. The town got its name from the surrounding, relatively flat landscape on the Ozark plateau. Founded quietly in the late 19th century, the community originally supported a post office (1890-1931), a general store and small local farms. When Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, Plano briefly appeared on the map, catering to early travelers with gasoline and basic provisions.

Unlike larger towns that thrived with vibrant neon motels and diners, Plano remained consistently simple and rural. Its general store and gas station were enough to serve both locals and passing motorists.

However, as traffic patterns shifted and nearby Springfield rapidly expanded, Plano’s fortunes declined. By the mid-20th century, many of its businesses closed, leaving behind scattered ruins and silent foundations, turing Plano into a true Route 66 ghost town slowly being reclaimed by the landscape.

Today little remains of Plano but its name and lingering evidence in the Ozark region, yet its story endures as a vital piece of Route 66 history. Its memory is preserved through its  proximity to Springfield attractions, such as the 1929 Rock Fountain Court and events like the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival. For seekers of the eerie and abandoned recesses of the Mother Road, Plano offers a subtle, ghostly reminder of the highway's lost towns and fading heydays.
