About Paris Springs, Missouri: Stonework and Sinclair on Route 66
Paris Springs traces its origins back to the 1870s as a small Ozarks settlement, then got a new lease on life when Route 66 rolled through in 1926. It never grew into a big town, but it gave travelers the essentials-a store, a gas station, and a garage-set in the rolling hills of Lawrence County.
The community's crown jewel was the Cobblestone Garage, built in 1924 by Leo Spencer. It's a hand-laid stone structure that kept motorists fueled, repaired, and welcomed for a friendly roadside stop. Time and bypass routes eventually took their toll, but in the 2000s it found new life thanks to preservationist Gary Turner, who restored the site as part of the Gay Parita Sinclair Station. With its vintage pumps, bright signs, and stone façade, the garage drew photographers, history buffs, and Route 66 travelers hungry for authentic nostalgia.
Today, Paris Springs is remembered more for its dedication to the past than its size. The Cobblestone Garage and the Gay Parita Sinclair Station stand as living museums of roadside America, greeting travelers with the same warmth they offered motorists nearly a century ago.
And when you pair them with nearby attractions like Carthage's 66 Drive-In Theatre and other local regional Route 66 festivals, Paris Springs keeps the Mother Road's spirit alive-one restored stone at a time.
