About Carthage, Missouri: Movies, Motels and Maple Leaves

Founded in 1842, Carthage grew into a prosperous community fueled by mining and agriculture before Route 66 arrived in town. When the highway opened in 1926, Carthage embraced its role as a key stop, offering travelers entertainment, lodging, and a picture-perfect downtown anchored by the Jasper County Courthouse, a grand Romanesque Revival masterpiece completed in the 1890s that still dominates the town square.

Carthage's most famous Route 66 landmark is the 66 Drive-In Theater, located at 17231 Old 66 Blvd. First opened in 1949, the theater delighted generations of families until its closing in the 1980s. Fortunately, it was lovingly restored in 1998 and continues to operate seasonally, offering moviegoers the rare thrill of catching a double feature beneath the open sky. This makes Carthage one of the few Route 66 towns where the drive-in movie tradition is still alive.

Another highlight is the Boots Court Motel, built in 1939 and restored to its classic neon glow. Known for its sleek Art Deco design and "Air Conditioned" sign, the motel famously hosted stars like Clark Gable and remains a favorite stop for travelers seeking an authentic night's stay on Route 66. Carthage also celebrates its heritage through annual Missouri events like the Carthage Crossroads Route 66 Festival and the Maple Leaf Festival, which fill the town with car shows, parades, and music. With its cinematic legacy, historic motels, and community pride, Carthage embodies the living spirit of the Mother Road.
