About Claremore, Oklahoma: Birthplace of a Legend
Claremore rests along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Rogers County, where Historic Route 66 and OK-88 weave through a community rich in cultural heritage. Founded in the 1830s by the Cherokee Nation and incorporated in 1883, the town is best known as the birthplace of Will Rogers (1879-1935). Rogers was an actor, humorist, vaudeville performer, political commentator, and one of the most quoted Americans of the early 20th century.
The Will Rogers Memorial Museum, opened in 1938, preserves his legacy through extensive exhibits, personal artifacts, and film footage that celebrate his wit, wisdom, and connection to Oklahoma. Visitors can explore his life story while enjoying sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
Claremore's historic attractions extend beyond Rogers' legacy. The 1907 Belvidere Mansion (located at 121 N Chickasaw Ave.), with its Victorian architecture and period furnishings, offers a glimpse into the elegance of the early 20th century. Another gem is the former Claremore Auto Dealership, now a museum highlighting local automotive and Route 66 history. Additionally, the Claremore Museum of History showcases multiple collections of artifacts from Claremore's notable individuals such as Andy Payne, Lynn Riggs, Stuart Roosa and Helen Robson Walton.
In the early 1900s, Claremore also became known for its radium baths, which drew visitors seeking their purported healing properties. Today, its historic downtown thrives with boutique shops, cafes, and preserved architecture that blends seamlessly with the town's Mother Road heritage.
Annual celebrations, like the Mid America Route 66 Nationals & Family Festival, supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, bring the community and visitors together for classic cars, live entertainment, and a shared appreciation for history.
Claremore remains a cornerstone of Oklahoma's Route 66 experience - a place where the past is celebrated, the welcome is warm, and the spirit of Will Rogers still rides tall.
