About Foyil, Oklahoma: Home of a Folk Art Giant
Foyil rests along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Rogers County, where Historic Route 66 and OK-66 pass through a quiet rural setting steeped in history. Founded in 1890 and named after postmaster Alfred Foyil, the town became known worldwide thanks to the creative vision of one man - folk artist Ed Galloway.
Just four miles east of town lies Ed Galloway's Totem Pole Park, centerpiece to which is the World's Largest Totem Pole: a 90-foot-tall, 30-foot-diameter concrete and steel structure covered in brightly painted bas-reliefs of Native American-inspired designs. Built over a 24-year-period (1937-1961), it stands as a colorful testament to Galloway's dedication to handcrafting art from humble materials. Surrounding the totem pole are 11 additional folk art pieces across 14 acres, making the park a National Register of Historic Places site as well as a must-see stop for Mother Road travelers.
Foyil also takes pride in being the hometown of Andy Payne the legendary 1928 "Bunion Derby" winner, who ran from Los Angeles to New York in a coast-to-coast footrace. His legacy is honored locally, adding another layer to the town's unique history.
Today, Foyil continues to welcome visitors drawn to its mix of Americana, artistry, and Route 66 nostalgia. Annual Route 66 celebrations, supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, keep the Mother Road spirit alive, ensuring that the "World's Largest Totem Pole" remains a towering symbol of roadside wonder.
