About Catoosa, Oklahoma: Where the Whale Makes Waves
Catoosa lies along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Rogers County, near Tulsa, OK. Founded in 1902, the town's growth was fueled by its strategic location and later by its connection to the Port of Catoosa, one of the largest inland seaports in the United States. While its economic roots run deep, it's the town's quirky roadside attraction that put it on the global Route 66 map.
The Blue Whale of Catoosa, an 80-foot-long, bright blue concrete sculpture, was built in 1972 by Hugh Davis as a whimsical gift for his wife. Originally part of a swimming hole and picnic area, the whale became a beloved stop for travelers seeking a photo op and a chance to stroll through its hollow body. Each year, the Blue Whale Comedy Festival introduces local comedy talent to the masses.
Beyond the whale, Catoosa offers other glimpses into its Mother Road past, including the 1920s Arrowood Trading Post, which once catered to travelers with curios and Native American crafts. The annual Cherokee Art Market features 150 elite First American artists nationwide, representing 47 federally-recognized tribes.
Today, Catoosa stands as a perfect blend of history, roadside kitsch, and community pride, proving that on Route 66, even the quirkiest landmarks can leave the biggest impressions.
