About Verdigris, Oklahoma: A Nutty Stop on the Mother Road

Verdigris rests on the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Rogers County, near the banks of the Verdigris River. Incorporated in 1981, it has long been a quiet waypoint for travelers heading toward Tulsa or Catoosa. While modest in size, Verdigris boasts one standout claim to fame: The Nut House.

Located at 26677 S Hwy 66, The Nut House has been delighting visitors since the 1970s with fresh pecans, homemade fudge, candied nuts, and shelves of quirky gifts and various Oklahoma souvenirs. Its tongue-in-cheek branding as the "Nuthouse" has made it both a shopping stop and a photo opportunity for Mother Road adventurers.

Verdigris also benefits from its proximity to nearby Claremore, home to the Will Rogers Memorial Museum and the Mid America Route 66 Nationals & Family Festival, which draws thousands each year. Supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, these events help keep the area's connection to the Mother Road strong.

Today, Verdigris remains a charming mix of rural Oklahoma warmth and roadside Americana, proving that even the smallest stops on Route 66 can leave a big impression - especially if they come with pecans and a sense of humor.
