About Buckhorn, Missouri: Roadside Spirit in the Ozarks
Nestled in Pulaski County along the historic 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66, Buckhorn offered travelers a lively break when driving through the heart of the Ozarks. Though unincorporated, this small stop quickly earned a lasting place in Route 66 lore because of its essential roadside services, welcoming locals and a reputation for good times for all.
One of its most memorable landmarks was the Buckhorn Tavern, a mid-20th-century favorite for both residents and weary travelers. It provided fuel, food and entertainment in equal measure, embodying the free-spirited culture that made Route 66 the legendary highway it is recognized as today. The glow of its neon sign once lit the Ozark night, and though it has faded into memory, collectors and historians still treasure its iconic imagery.
The name Buckhorn comes from the nearby Buckhorn Branch creek, reflecting the natural beauty of the surrounding Ozark hills. Its location also tied closely to the history of Fort Leonard Wood, as many military families passed through Buckhorn during the highway's heydey.
Today, Buckhorn lives on through the celebrations of nearby Waynesville's Pulaski County Route 66 Festival - affectionately known as the Route 66 Hogs & Frogs Festival. With vintage car shows, live music and a retro roadside atmosphere, the event honors communities like Buckhorn and keeps the Mother Road's legacy thriving in the Ozarks.
