About Laquey, Missouri: A Small Stop With a Big Name
Laquey is a cozy unincorporated community in Pulaski County, situated along the 1926-1977 Route 66 alignment, just off I-44. If you're new to it, the spelling can trip you up, but locals state the town's pronunciation is "Lakeway." The name may trace back to the French word "quay," a reminder of the area's diverse influences. Even though it's small, Laquey's roots reach back to the late 19th century.
Back in Route 66's Golden Age, Laquey was a trusty pit stop for travelers who could acquire fuel, provisions, or stop for rest at its general store and gas station. Being near Fort Leonard Wood also gave the town added importance, providing a welcome sight for countless military families on the move.
It never quite grew into the neon-lit hub some of its Route 66 neighbors achieved, but Laquey's heritage can still be felt. The old Laquey School and a few scattered roadside relics whisper of the days when the Mother Road was America's main artery.
Today, Laquey maintains its quiet Ozark charm. You'll sense the Route 66 spirit nearby at the Route 66 Hogs & Frogs Festival (also referred to as the Pulaski County Route 66 Festival). With car shows, live music, and retro fun, the event keeps Laquey's place in the Route 66 story vibrant - proving that even the smallest towns add unforgettable chapters to the Mother Road.
