About Devils Elbow, Missouri: Rugged Beauty on The Mother Road
Devils Elbow is a scenic and historic community along the Big Piney River in Pulaski County. The town was once part of the original 1926-1977 Route 66 alignment. Its name came from a notorious river bend that caused endless headaches for loggers floating timber downstream in the 1800s - a curve so difficult it earned the devilish nickname that still defines the area today.
The community flourished during the highway era, serving as both a natural wonder and a vital roadside stop. The Devils Elbow Bridge, a steel truss span built in 1923, became a vital crossing and a favorite landmark for travelers. Though a modern replacement bridge was added in 2014, the historic span was preserved, allowing visitors to walk across it and take in the sweeping views of the river valley.
Another Route 66 institution is the Elbow Inn Bar & BBQ, opened in 1937. Known for hearty food, cold drinks, and a famous bra-covered ceiling, the Elbow Inn has become a destination in itself. It is equal parts a quirky roadside attraction and also a beloved local gathering place. For decades, it has embodied the spirit of Route 66 with its mix of humor, hospitality, and Americana. The Elbow Inn is currently closed for renovations, but Route 66 wanderers can still visit the landmark and snap photos for the Gram.
Devils Elbow remains a highlight of Pulaski County's Route 66 heritage. Its story is celebrated each year at the Pulaski County Route 66 Hogs & Frogs Festival in nearby Waynesville, where classic cars, live music, and history buffs gather to honor the Mother Road. With its rugged landscapes, preserved landmarks, and roadside legends, Devils Elbow is proof that Route 66 is as much about colorful communities as it is about the open road.
