About Winona, Arizona: A Song, A Bridge, And a Legacy

Just a short drive east of Flagstaff, Winona might be small in size but it holds an outsized place in Mother Road history. Before Route 66's official birth in 1926, Winona was already a bustling stop along the National Old Trails Highway, a key transcontinental route.

The town’s early significance was tied to the Walnut Creek Bridge, built in 1924 to span a canyon crossing along what would later become Route 66. Though now closed to vehicular traffic, the bridge still stands as a graceful piece of early 20th-century engineering, recognized in 1988 by the National Register of Historic Places.

For decades, Winona's main draw for motorists was the Winona Trading Post, later known as Winona Texaco. Opening in 1929, it served locals and travelers alike for more than seven decades. By the time it rebranded as a Shell station in 2003, it had earned the remarkable distinction of being the longest continuously operating Texaco station in the United States: a true testament to the tenacity of this small community.

Winona's fame, however, grew beyond its physical landmarks thanks to a single, enduring line in Bobby Troup's 1946 classic hit, Route 66, famously sung by Nat King Cole: "Don't forget Winona." This lyrical shoutout turned the town into a piece of Americana pop culture, ensuring that travelers, even those who might otherwise pass it by, knew its name.

Today, Winona remains a peaceful stop framed by ponderosa pine forests and the rugged beauty of Northern Arizona. Visitors can explore nearby Walnut Canyon National Monument, home to ancient cliff dwellings, or simply soak in the nostalgia of a place that connects early highway travel, classic American music, and natural beauty.

Whether you come for the song, the history, or the scenery, one thing is certain: once you've been here, you won't forget Winona.
