About Cosnino, Arizona: A Railroad Stop Along the Mother Road
Cosnino is a small unincorporated community east of Flagstaff. While it may seem like a simple blip on the map, its roots run deeper than a rye plan in terms of the history of Western travel.
Originally established as a railroad siding on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railway, Cosnino served as a critical point for cattle shipments and freight in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. When U.S. Route 66 was first commissioned in 1926, the road closely followed the railroad right-of-way through this area, placing Cosnino directly on the Mother Road.
Though Cosnino never grew into a bustling town, it represented the lifeline that railroads and highways provided to ranchers and settlers in the region. Today, it is a quiet community but the sight of freight trains still thundering through echoes its past, while the remnants of old alignments of Route 66 can still be explored nearby.
For travelers seeking a glimpse of the less-commercialized side of Route 66, Cosnino offers a reflective pause between the more famous stops of Flagstaff and Winona. It's a place where the romance of the rails and the nostalgia of the open road truly meet, providing a perfect representation of the Mother Road's unsung history.
