About Twin Arrows, Arizona: Arrows, Legends and the Mother Road

Just east of Flagstaff, Twin Arrows stands as one of the most photographed and recognized remnants of Route 66. The town is an official Route 66 Ghost Town defined by two massive wooden arrows plunged into the earth, their faded tips still pointing the way.

In its mid-century prime, these iconic arrows marked the entrance to the Twin Arrows Trading Post. Opened in the late 1940s, the bustling stop offered fuel, Navajo crafts, souvenirs, and diner meals to countless travelers crossing Northern Arizona. Its name and imagery were a clever nod to both local Native American culture and the memorable, attention-grabbing marketing tactics of Route 66's golden era.

Twin Arrows also gained a layer of pop culture fame thanks to the 1994 film Forrest Gump, with Twin Arrows being the spot where Forrest briefly stops running to wipe the mud of his face and inadvertently helps to create the classic smiley face t-shirt.

The idea that Forrest Gump "ran through here" only adds to the site's enduring mystique. This stretch of highway once hosted not only Twin Arrows but also its nearby sister stop, Toonerville, a smaller trading post that now adds an air of ghostly melancholy to the area's otherwise nostalgic charm.

Toonerville's history is marked by tragedy, including the accidental shooting death of the original owner's teenage son in 1947. Additionally, a violent, unsolved robbery in 1971 occurred where the subsequent owner was murdered and his wife severely injured. Now private property, these events have fueled the local whisper that the site is haunted, leaving a deep scar on the area's legacy.

By the 1990s, the decline of cross-country road travel and the realignment of I-40 sealed the fate of Twin Arrows. The trading post was abandoned, leaving behind weathered buildings and the iconic arrows as silent sentinels. Though volunteers briefly repainted the arrows in 2009, time and weather have once again worn them down.

Today, Twin Arrows is a magnet for photographers, Route 66 enthusiasts, and curious travelers eager to stand beside one of the highway's most distinctive landmarks. Whether you're visiting to get the perfect photo for your IG, soaking in the echoes of mid-century Americana, or reflecting on the bittersweet fate of so many Mother Road towns, Twin Arrows delivers an experience as striking as its name.
