About Las Vegas, New Mexico: A City of Frontier Legends

Founded in 1835 as a fortified Spanish settlement on the Santa Fe Trail, Las Vegas grew from a dusty frontier plaza into a magnet for traders, gunfighters and railroad barons. When the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway steamed in during 1879, a second "New Town" sprang up beside the tracks, complete with elegant opera houses, brick mercantiles  and the grand Castañeda Harvey House hotel.

The original 1926 alignment of Route 66 looped through Las Vegas, guiding cross-country motorists down Douglas Ave., past glowing gas lamps, neon-lit storefronts and cafés perfumed with the scent of roasting green chiles. Travelers swapped tales in the same saloons where Doc Holliday once dealt faro, Teddy Roosevelt rallied his Rough Riders before charging up San Juan Hill and Billy the Kid allegedly slipped through back doors one step ahead of the law.

Though Route 66 was rerouted southward in 1937, Las Vegas remains a living museum of the Old West. Twin historic plazas showcase beautiful Territorial-style architecture, the turreted Montezuma Castle rises above natural hot springs in the foothills, and more than 900 buildings on the National Register stand proud beneath brilliant New Mexico skies.
