About Romeroville, New Mexico: A Junction of Legendary Trails
Perched on the edge of the Sangre de Cristo foothills, just south of Las Vegas, lies Romeroville: a quiet crossroad with a story as old as the trails that shaped the West. In the 1880s, rancher and Territorial delegate Trinidad Romero built a grand adobe inn here to serve weary freighters and stagecoaches along the Santa Fe Trail.
Decades later, early motorists following the Ozark Trail, one of America’s first coast-to-coast auto routes, and found the same dusty junction. They raised a concrete obelisk to guide travelers heading west through the open plains.
When Route 66 arrived in 1926, it followed those same ruts in the earth. Tin Lizzies (Model Ts), cattle trucks and Okie caravans rolled past Romero’s fading inn and the few flickering gas pumps that glowed in the prairie night. Travelers stopped to refuel, study the Ozark Trail marker and push onward toward Santa Fe's mesas or the broad plains of Tucumcari.
In 1937, the highway shifted south. Yet Romeroville’s legacy as a meeting point of travelers and trails remains. Stand here today, and you’ll feel the weight of history beneath your feet, whether that is the iron wagon wheels, white-wall tires or the rumbling eighteen-wheelers all passing over the same ground.
Among sun-baked adobe ruins, the lonely Ozark Trail monument, and distant mountain silhouettes, you can almost hear the echoes of those who paused, if only for a moment, at this timeless Route 66 crossroads.
