About Clines Corners, New Mexico: An Oasis on the Mother Road

Perched at 7,000 feet above sea level, where Interstate 40 meets U.S. 285, Clines Corners has been welcoming travelers to the high desert of New Mexico for more than 90 years. Founded in 1934 by entrepreneur Roy E. Cline, the stop began as a a modest filling station and café, offering food, fuel, and a friendly smile to motorists braving the long stretch of highway between Santa Rosa and Moriarty.

When the 1937 realignment of Route 66 brought new waves of travelers through this remote crossroads, Cline relocated and expanded his business, establishing what would soon become one of the most enduring and recognizable stops on the Mother Road.

A Roadside Empire of Nostalgia

Over the decades, Clines Corners evolved from a dusty outpost into a 30,000-square-foot roadside landmark: a true oasis amid the open plains. Its iconic neon signs and hand-painted billboards have long lured travelers in search of fuel, coffee, and a slice of Americana.

Inside, visitors can browse aisles of turquoise jewelry, retro candy, Hatch chile treats, and every other imaginable Route 66 souvenir. The red-roofed complex, glowing like a beacon against the desert night, continues to serve wanderers, bikers, and RV caravans 24 hours a day, just as Mr. Roy Cline intended it to be, back in 1934.

Clines Corners Today: A Beacon on the Plains

Outside, the high desert stretches endlessly, punctuated by distant mesas and railroad tracks that shimmer in the sun. Step inside, and you’re greeted by the smell of fresh coffee and the sight of homemade fudge stacked beside shelves of nostalgic trinkets.

It’s part truck stop, part time capsule, and all heart: a living reminder of how the simple roadside stop became an essential part of the Route 66 experience. Whether you’re chasing the Mother Road westward or detouring toward Santa Fe, Clines Corners remains the quintessential “gas station in the desert,” a beacon of comfort, curiosity, and connection on the open road.
