About Carterville, Missouri: A Small Town with Super Spirit

Carterville lies along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 in Jasper County, tucked between Webb City and Carthage. Founded in 1875, it began as a mining community, producing lead and zinc that fueled the local economy. When Route 66 was commissioned, Carterville found new life as a highway stop, with diners, motels and shops serving travelers making their way through the Ozarks.

One of Carterville's most unusual attractions is the SuperTam on 66, a 1950s-style ice cream stand located at 221 E. Main St. In 2017, the shop installed a larger-than-life Superman statue, tying the town to the enduring legacy of the comic book hero. While the creators of Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, hailed from Cleveland, Ohio, the statue in Carterville celebrates the Man of Steel as a cultural icon recognized around the world - and a fun photo stop for Route 66 road trippers.

Today, Carterville embraces both its mining history and its playful roadside identity. Its proximity to Joplin's Route 66 Mural Park and Carthage's neon-lit Boots Court Motel makes it part of a rich corridor of Jasper County attractions. With festivals like the Carthage Crossroads Route 66 Festival and ongoing community pride, Carterville shines as a small town with super-sized heart along the Mother Road.
