About Webb City, Missouri: Faith and Heritage on Route 66

Webb City sits on the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 in Jasper County, growing out of its founding in 1875 as a lead-and-zinc-mining boomtown. The prosperity of the Tri-State Mining District fueled the city's early development, while Route 66 later brought travelers through its bustling downtown and roadside businesses. The neon glow of motels like the Plaza Motel, along with classic diners and service stations, gave Webb City its distinctive highway-era character.

The town's most famous landmark is the Praying Hands Monument, a 32-foot-tall, 100-ton sculpture built in 1971 by artist Jack Dawson at King's Christian College (now Ozark Christian College). Located at Dawson Drive, the monument depicts two massive hands in prayer, symbolizing faith, hope, and unity. Over the decades, it has become a cherished symbol for the community and a spiritual waypoint for Route 66 travelers seeking reflection along their journey.

Today, Webb City celebrates both its mining heritage and its place on the Mother Road. Visitors can explore its revitalized historic downtown, stop by the Route 66 Welcome Center, or take part in regional festivals such as the Route 66 Crossroads Festival in Carthage, which highlights the shared history of nearby towns. By blending its rich industrial past with enduring symbols of faith, Webb City continues to embody the diverse spirit of Route 66.
