About Wilmington, Illinois: The Island City with a Giant
Wilmington, Illinois sits on the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66 in Will County. Founded in 1836 and later incorporated in 1854, it earned the nickname "The Island City" thanks to the Kankakee River, which nearly encircles the town and gives it a distinct island-like feel.
Wilmington is home to one of Route 66's most beloved icons, the Gemini Giant. Standing 28 feet tall at 201 Bridge St., this fiberglass "Muffler Man" astronaut has greeted travelers since 1965. He stands proudly in front of the historic Launching Pad Drive-In, a diner that first opened in 1960 and became a must-stop for generations of Mother Road enthusiasts. As of this writing, the Launching Pad Drive-In has either temporarily or permanently closed down (October 2025 update).
Visitors can also explore South Island Park (located at the same location as Gemini Giant), a scenic space that offers riverfront views and a historic mill race dating back to 1838. The original stretch of Route 66 pavement still runs directly through downtown Wilmington, allowing travelers to experience the road much as it was in its heyday.
With its iconic roadside giant, charming riverside setting and its preserved stretch of the Mother Road, Wilmington offers a picture-perfect stop for anyone seeking to relive the glory days of Route 66.
