About Joliet, Illinois: Built by Industry, Fueled by History
Joliet is a City located in Will County and situated along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Nicknamed "The City of Steel and Stone," it is one of the most important early stops on the Mother Road. Founded in 1834, and later incorporated in 1852, its location along the Des Plaines River helped it grow into a hub of industry. The City was known for both its steel production and distinctive limestone quarries that supplied stone for buildings across the Midwest.
One of Joliet's crown jewels is the Rialto Square Theatre, a stunning 1926 vaudeville palace known as the "Jewel of Joliet." This beautifully preserved theatre continues to host world-class performances to this day and stands as a tribute to the City's glamorous past.
Joliet also invites visitors to step into its industrial history at the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, which preserves the remains of a 19th-century steel mill with interpretive trails and exhibits. Fans of pop culture and history alike flock to the Old Joliet Prison, a limestone fortress made famous by movies and TV shows like The Blues Brothers and Prison Break.
Modern attractions include catching a game at Duly Health and Care Field, home of the Joliet Slammers baseball team, and exploring the Joliet Area Historical Museum, which covers everything from Native American history to the City's industrial boom. With its combination of grit, grandeur and rich heritage, Joliet offers travelers a truly unforgettable Route 66 stop.
