About Romeoville, Illinois: From "Romeo" to Romeoville on the Mother Road

Romeoville is a Will County community along the historic alignment of Route 66 (IL-53). First platted as Romeo in 1835, the village voted to incorporate and adopt the name Romeoville in 1895. The naming of the town was a nod to its onetime twin-turned-rival town, Juliet (now Joliet).

A beloved Route 66 landmark, White Fence Farm opened in the early 1920s on Joliet Road and still welcomes travelers with its famously crispy "World's Greatest Chicken." Additionally, you can also visit the White Fence Farm Petting Zoo, which now includes five new female alpacas for viewing. You'll also find Norwegian Dwarf mini goats, cattle and of course, chickens.

For deeper local history, visit the Fitzpatrick House (1840s), a limestone residence tied to the area's quarry era and now part of Lewis University, and explore the The Isle a la Cache Museum on the Des Plaines River, which interprets the region's 18th century fur trade heritage and canal era story.

With prairie preserves, canal and river trails, as well as a proud spot along the original Historic Route 66, Romeoville offers a restful pause between countryside calmness and the wildness of Chicagoland energy.
