About White Oak, Oklahoma: A Quiet Stretch of the Mother Road

White Oak sits along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Craig County, just 6.8 miles west of Vinita, OK. Named for the Oklahoma white oak trees that once dotted the area, the unincorporated community developed in the early 20th century as a modest rural settlement.

During Route 66's heyday, travelers passing through White Oak encountered a working sawmill, a local Moose Lodge that became a community gathering spot and a scattering of homes and small businesses that served motorists and locals alike. Today, the sawmill and lodge are gone or in ruins, but their presence remains part of the town's quiet history.

While White Oak may lack the neon lights and roadside spectacles of other Route 66 towns, its modest landmarks, such as the community's Little League field, tell the story of a place rooted in small town simplicity and neighborly connection.

Its location near Vinita, home to attractions like Clanton's Café and the annual Vinita Route 66 Festival (supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association), ensures that White Oak remains connected to the Mother Road's living heritage.

For those who slow down to take the old highway, White Oak offers a glimpse into the quieter, less-commercial side of Route 66, offering proof that every community along the Mother Road has a story worth remembering.
