About Vinita, Oklahoma: The Heart of America's Crossroads
Vinita sits on the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Craig County, where Historic Route 66, US-60, and US-69 intersect, a convergence that has long defined its identity. Founded in 1871 and named for sculptor Vinnie Ream, who created the Lincoln statue in the U.S. Capitol, Vinita became a natural travel hub even before Route 66 existed, serving travelers along the old Ozark Trail.
When Route 66 was established in 1926, Vinita's location cemented its role as a major stop for cross-country motorists. One of its most enduring landmarks is Clanton's Café, which opened in 1927 and is still family-owned, making it one of the oldest continually operating restaurants on Route 66.
In 1957, Vinita gained another claim to fame with the construction of the world's largest McDonald's arch, which spans the interstate and offers travelers a unique dining experience with panoramic highway views.
The Eastern Trails Museum preserves Vinita's history, showcasing Native American heritage, pioneer life, and the evolution of transportation in the region. Annual events like the Vinita Route 66 Festival, supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association, keep the town's Mother Road spirit alive with classic cars, live music, and family activities.
Vinita's blend of historic charm, central location, and memorable roadside attractions ensure that it lives up to its title, America's Crossroads, and remains an essential stop for those traveling the Mother Road.
