About Sunset Hills, Missouri: Where Mid-Century Architecture Meets The Mother Road
Sunset Hills is a scenic community in St. Louis County. The town occupies a prominent spot along the 1932-1977 alignment of Route 66. Though the city wasn't officially incorporated until 1957, its roadside legacy stretches back earlier, when the convenience of Watson Road brought a steady stream of cross-country motorists through town. With its small town charm and accessible location just southwest of St. Louis, Sunset Hills became an attractive stop for travelers in search of food, fuel and rest.
The most famous of its landmarks was the Holiday Inn which was built in 1962. A quintessential example of mid-century roadside architecture, the motel stood out with its sleek, modern design and iconic neon sign that lit up the night sky. As part of the rising Holiday Inn chain, it represented a new era of travel: one that promised consistency, comfort and reliability for families crisscrossing the country on Route 66. For decades, the Holiday Inn became a trusted refuge for motorists, embedding itself in the memories of countless road trips. Though the motel closed in the early 2000s and was eventually demolished, its image survives in photographs and stories, a nostalgic reminder of the Mother Road's heydey.
Today, Sunset Hills continues to celebrate its ties to Route 66. While many of its classic motels and eateries have disappeared, the spirit of the highway endures through nearby landmarks like the Meramec River U.S. 66 Bridge and community participation in the annual Route 66 St. Louis Festival. This lively event, featuring vintage cars, music and retro flair, ensures the legacy of Route 66 in Sunset Hills remains alive, bridging the glow of neon past with the vibing energy of the present.
