About St. Louis: River Crossings and the Arch
French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau founded St. Louis in 1764 near where the Missouri River meets the Mississippi. The river town grew into the jumping-off point for the American West.
Route 66 changed course here many times. In 1926 it crossed the river on the McKinley Bridge and wound through the city to Manchester Road. Later routes used the Municipal Bridge downtown. By the 1930s a city route ran down Gravois and Chippewa to Watson Road. A bypass skirted the city on Lindbergh Boulevard.
The Chain of Rocks Bridge opened in July 1929 with a famous 22-degree bend partway across. Today it carries only walkers and cyclists. On the riverfront, the 630-foot Gateway Arch was completed on October 28, 1965. On the Chippewa stretch of old 66, Ted Drewes has served frozen custard since the 1940s.
