About St. Clair, Missouri: A Crossroads of Travel and Time
St. Clair is located in southeast Franklin County and has been tied to travel since its founding in 1843 as a stagecoach way station. Named either for a local engineer of the St. Louis and Frisco Railroad who settled there or for General Arthur St. Clair (or perhaps for both), the town became a vital stop on the original St. Louis-to-Springfield road long before Route 66 arrived.
Its early role in hospitality laid the foundation for the town's future as a key destination on the Mother Road. Officially incorporated in 1881, St. Clair grew steadily until Route 66 transformed it into a bustling hub of motels, cafés and other roadside services.
Among the town's most iconic establishments were the St. Clair Motel and the Lewis Café. Opened in 1938, Lewis Café quickly became a beloved stop for hearty meals and community gathering, embodying the warmth and welcome that Route 66 travelers came to expect. Other landmarks, like the 1940s Sunset Court Motel still stand today (although it recently temporarily closed) as reminders of the golden age of American road travel.
Beyond its Route 66 connection, St. Clair's story includes connections to the Illinois Indians, 19th century coal mining and the overall resilience of a small U.S. town that has adapted through generations. Modern visitors can still trace this rich history while enjoying the town's enduring character.
The community's heritage remains alive not just through preserved landmarks but also through its participation in regional Route 66 celebrations, including the nearby Route 66 Cubafest.
These events ensure that the spirit of the Mother Road is passed down to new generations. For travelers, St. Clair offers a rare blend of history, hospitality and small town Americana that makes it an unforgettable stop along Route 66.
