About Rock Hill, Missouri: Roadside Spirit with a Rock 'n' Roll Heart
Rock Hill is located in St. Louis County, just southwest of downtown, and it has long been tied to travel and hospitality. Incorporated in 1929, the community quickly found itself along the busy 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66, where diners, motels and roadside taverns welcomed motorists heading west. Though small in size, Rock Hill's mix of working-glass grit, hospitality and roadside commerce gave it an outsized role on the highway.
One of today's most recognizable landmarks is the Trainwreck Saloon, located at 9243 Manchester Rd. Opened in 1982, the Trainwreck Saloon continued the operation in a historic building which has housed a saloon in Rock Hill since 1890, making it the oldest continuously operated tavern in St. Louis County. Its lively spirit and rock 'n' roll atmosphere embody the fun-loving culture that made Route 66 famous. with live music, hearty pub food and an atmosphere steeped in Americana. The Trainwreck Saloon has become both a local favorite and a nostalgic stop for travelers retracing the Mother Road.
Rock Hill's history is also tied to its early quarry industry, which shaped the landscape and provided the stone for many of the community's early structures. While much of its original roadside architecture has changed with the times, the town's welcoming vibe remains strong. Events such as the Route 66 St. Louis Festival ensure that Rock Hill's role in the legacy of America's Main street is never forgotten, drawing enthusiasts with vintage cars, live entertainment and retro flair.
