About Riverton, Kansas: Small Town, Big Legacy

Riverton rests along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Cherokee County, just south of Baxter Springs and west of Galena. Though small in size, the community has existed since the 1870s, welcoming settlers drawn to fertile farmland and the railroad. When Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, Riverton quickly found itself on the map, serving motorists with just a handful of facilities that came to define its quirky, small-town character.

At the heart of Riverton's Route 66 identity is the Eisler Brothers' Old Riverton Store, which opened in 1925 and was originally names Williams Store. The business opened even before the Mother Road was officially designated. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this general store and deli continues to serve travelers with groceries, sandwiches, and souvenirs, making it one of the oldest continuously operating businesses on Route 66. Its authenticity and welcoming atmosphere have turned it into a must-see stop for modern road trippers.

Nearby stands another piece of history: the Rainbow Curve Bridge (also known as the Rainbow Bridge). Built in 1923, this single-span Marsh Arch Bridge over Brush Creek is the only surviving bridge of its kind on the entire Route 66 alignment. Though bypassed in 1992, it has been preserved for pedestrians and serves as a beloved photo spot for travelers. Together, Riverton's simple but significant landmarks, along with annual events supported by the Kansas Historic Route 66 Association, keep this humble stretch of the Mother Road alive for future generations.
