About Baxter Springs, Kansas: A Civil War Town Turned Route 66 Hub

Baxter Springs was founded in 1858 in Cherokee County and quickly became one of the first "cow towns" of the Old West, serving as a trading post along the frontier. The town also witnessed one of the darker episodes of the Civil War when Confederate guerrillas under William Quantrill and his raiders, donning Federal uniforms, surprised a detachment of Union soldiers at Baxter Springs and slaughtered about 90 of them in 1863. Despite its turbulent beginnings, Baxter Springs grew into a resilient community, positioned to thrive once Route 66 arrived.

When Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, Baxter Springs gained a vital place on the short but significant 13-mile Kansas stretch of the highway. In 1929, Kansas became the first state to pave its entire section of Route 66, making travel smoother and safer. Just north of Baxter Springs stood the Rainbow Curve Bridge (also known as Brush Creek Bridge), a 1923 Marsh Rainbow Arch bridge spanning Brush Creek. This graceful white concrete arch carried Route 66 travelers until the 1960s and remains today as the only surviving bridge of its kind on the Mother Road, earning its place on the National Register of Historic Places.

Baxter Springs' Route 66 heritage is also preserved through landmarks like the Independent Oil and Gas Service Station, built in the 1930s and now serving as a Route 66 Visitor Center.

Thanks to the efforts of Kansas Historic Route 66 Association and its annual Route 66 events, Baxter Springs embodies the enduring legacy of a frontier town that became a beloved Mother Road destination. It stands ready to welcome modern travelers seeking history and authentic hospitality along America's most famous highway.
