About Peach Springs, Arizona: Tribal Capital on the Mother Road

Nestled in Mohave County along historic Route 66 in the high desert of northwestern Arizona, Peach Springs serves as the tribal capital of the Hualapai Nation. The town takes its name from the peach trees that once flourished near a natural spring, providing a life-giving oasis in an otherwise rugged landscape.

For centuries, the Hualapai people have called this land home, and during the golden age of Route 66 (from the 1920s through the 1950s), Peach Springs became an important service stop for travelers making the long journey across Arizona.

At the heart of town stand two historic landmarks: the Hualapai Tribal Office, the seat of governance for the Nation, and the Osterman Gas Station, a relic from the heyday of Route 66 travel. Another cornerstone of Peach Springs history is the Peach Springs Trading Post, which the Hualapai Tribe purchased in the 1950s. For years, it served as both a post office and a general store, offering goods, services, and connection to travelers and locals alike. Its cultural and historical significance earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, cementing its role in the intertwined histories of Route 66 and the Hualapai people.

Peach Springs also serves as the launching point for some of Arizona's most breathtaking adventures. The Hualapai River Runners offer rafting trips through the Grand Canyon, while the nearby Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge stretching over the canyon's edge, draws visitors from around the world.

For many travelers, Peach Springs is the gateway to Grand Canyon West, but it's also a destination in its own right, offering an authentic glimpse into Native American culture through local events, art, and community life.

The town has also earned pop culture recognition as the inspiration for "Radiator Springs" in Pixar's Cars. The film's story of a once-bustling town bypassed by Interstate 40 mirrors the economic challenges Peach Springs and other Route 66 communities faced after the highway's decline. Yet today, Peach Springs stands resilient as a living testament to the Hualapai Nation's heritage and the enduring magic of the Mother Road.
