About Grand Canyon Caverns, Arizona: Underground Oddity of the Mother Road

Situated along Route 66 near Peach Springs, Grand Canyon Caverns is one of the largest dry caverns in the United States, while also being one of the quirkiest stops on the entire highway.

The caverns were accidentally discovered in 1927 when a woodcutter named Walter Peck nearly fell into a hole in the rocky plateau. What he found was a vast underground chamber, dry as a bone and filled with unusual limestone formations. Unlike wet caves, the air inside these caverns is completely arid, preserving everything from fossils to century-old objects in pristine condition.

Originally dubbed Dinosaur Caverns in the mid-20th century (complete with a giant prehistoric statue still greeting visitors today), the site quickly became a beloved roadside attraction. In the 1960s, it was renamed Grand Canyon Caverns, capitalizing on its proximity to the world-famous natural wonder. Its towering retro sign along Route 66-promising mystery and marvels underground-has been luring travelers off the highway for generations.

Visitors descend 210 feet below the surface via elevator, entering a world that feels frozen in time. Guided tours reveal geological wonders, ancient fossils, and quirky displays that keep the experience firmly in the realm of Route 66 fun.

The caverns are also home to one of the most unusual accommodations in America: the Underground Suite. It is a fully furnished motel room located deep inside the cavern, offering an overnight stay like no other.

Beyond the underground wonders, the site offers a diner, RV park, gift shop, and scenic desert views. The combination of authentic geological history and offbeat roadside charm makes Grand Canyon Caverns a perfect embodiment of what Route 66 does best: surprise travelers with something they didn't know they were looking for.

Grand Canyon Caverns is, indeed, "Wacky but Real," a place where the wonders of nature and the imagination of classic roadside tourism meet beneath the Arizona desert.
