About McLean, Texas: A Living Museum on the Mother Road

Tucked within the Texas panhandle, McLean proudly carries the title “The Heart of Old Route 66.” McLean is a place where the golden age of the highway still lives and breathes.

Founded in the early 1900s in Gray County as a ranching and railroad town, McLean transformed into a bustling stop when Historic Route 66 came through in 1926. For decades, the town thrived as a welcoming oasis for weary travelers, with cozy motels, bustling cafés, and friendly gas stations lining its brick-paved streets.

A Living Museum of the Mother Road

Today, McLean remains one of the best-preserved Route 66 towns in America, a true open-air museum where time seems to stand still. Visitors can explore the acclaimed Devil's Rope and Texas Route 66 Museum, located in a restored 1920s building that celebrates both barbed wire history and the culture of the Mother Road.

Just down the street, the first Phillips 66 gas station built in Texas, (constructed in 1928), has been meticulously restored to its original glory, offering a rare glimpse into the early days of cross-country travel.

McLean Today

Walking through McLean feels like stepping straight into the mid-20th century. Vintage neon signs flicker over quiet sidewalks, historic storefronts still echo with the hum of travelers long gone and locals greet visitors with genuine Texas warmth.

More than just a stop along the highway, McLean embodies the enduring heart and nostalgia of America’s Main Street, offering a living tribute to the stories, spirit, and soul of Route 66 itself.
