About McLean, Illinois: Where History and Heart Meet on Historic Route 66

McLean is a welcoming community in McLean County, located along the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Settled in 1855 and later incorporated in 1867, the town's character is a mix of its railroad heritage and its Mother Road legacy.

McLean has become affectionately known as the home of the Shaggy Dog Ranch, a private farmstead devoted to rescuing and caring for Old English Sheepdogs. The ranch gained national attention in 2019 after the remarkable rescue of "Shaggy," a dog who became a local hero and a symbol of second chances.

Travelers on Route 66 also know McLean for the legendary Dixie Truck Stop, which first opened in 1928 and still serves as a bustling hub for food, fuel and fellowship at 315 Dixie Rd. History buffs will also appreciate the McLean Depot Museum at 266 East Dixie Rd., where original railroad artifacts tell the story of the town's early growth.

Each May, McLean rolls out the welcome mat during the Red Carpet Corridor events, inviting classic car enthusiasts and Route 66 travelers to experience its authentic small town spirit. With its blend of roadside history, community pride and a special place for man's best friend, McLean is a stop with both heart and heritage on the Mother Road.
