About Luther, Oklahoma: Nuts About the Mother Road
Luther sits along the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Oklahoma County. Founded in 1898, the town grew strategically at the crossroads of US-66 and US-77, making it a natural and essential stopping point for early travelers. The town's abundance of thriving pecan groves, a mainstay of the local economy for generations, earned Luther its fitting nickname, "Pecan Crossroads of OK."
The town's historical significance is magnified by its roadside landmarks. These include a weathered 1920s gas station and the fully restored Threatt Filling Station, a pivotal Route 66 business listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Crucially, the station not only fueled cars but also served as a safe haven for African American travelers during the era of segregation, cementing Luther's place in the highway's social history.
Luther's agricultural heritage shines brightly at the annual Luther Pecan Festival, which draws visitors with pecan-themed foods, local crafts, and live entertainment. Its close proximity to Arcadia's Round Barn and active participation in Route 66 celebrations (supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association) help ensure that Luther's unique history and flavor remain alive for future generations.
Note: It should be noted that the name "US-66" is used interchangeably with "Route 66" and is not the current U.S. Route 66 highway.
