About Hackberry, Arizona: Mining Camp to Mother Road Treasure
Hackberry is the oldest town along this stretch of Route 66 in Mohave County, with roots reaching back to the silver boom of 1874. The original mining camp was established on the east side of the Peacock Mountains, named after a large desert hackberry tree (Celtis pallida) that grew beside a vital spring.
In 1883, the town relocated to meet the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, transforming into a bustling, cattle-shipping hub that ranked third in Arizona for shipping volume. With miners, ranchers, and railroad workers mingling in saloons and supply stores, Hackberry quickly earned a reputation for being as rowdy as it was industrious.
When the mines played out and the cattle industry shifted, Hackberry's fortunes faded quickly, until the arrival of Route 66 gave it a second life. Travelers crossing the Arizona desert found Hackberry to be a welcome stop for fuel, supplies, and a friendly face.
