About Carnuel, New Mexico: Where Route 66 Sings a Song
Located in Tijeras Canyon, just east of Albuquerque, Carnuel began as an 18th-century farming outpost before becoming a key waypoint on the 1937 Route 66 realignment. But its biggest modern claim to fame arrived in 2014, when the New Mexico Department of Transportation and National Geographic carved a quarter-mile stretch of rumble strips into NM 333 (Old Route 66) between mile markers 4 and 5.
When you drive eastbound at exactly 45 mph, travelers will feel the grooves vibrating their wheels in perfect pitch, playing the iconic melody of "America the Beautiful." The project was designed both to slow traffic through the canyon and to add a little magic to an otherwise rugged grade, earning Carnuel the well-deserved nickname "Musical Highway."
