About Brentwood, Missouri: Burgers, Root Beer and Route 66 Spirit

Brentwood is a cozy suburb of St. Louis, nestled in the heart of St. Louis County. Brentwood holds a special place on the 1926-1977 alignment of Route 66. Officially incorporated in 1919, the town grew into a welcoming haven for travelers, blending small town warmth with the bustle of America's most famous highway. Its location just west of downtown St. Louis made it a convenient and memorable stop for motorists looking to refuel, rest and recharge.

The crown jewel of Brentwood's Route 66 legacy is Carl's Drive-In, located at 9033 Manchester Rd. First opened in 1959 (the same year that Alaska and Hawaii joined the Union as US States), Carl's quickly became a roadside favorite. The drive-in is housed in a building that used to be a Lubrite Service Station, followed by the Walter Schuermann Filling Station and the M. Nezol Gas Company. In 1943, the building was converted to a hot dog stand for a restaurant called the Foot Long Hot Dog Company. Then in 1959, a tornado badly damaged the building and new owners converted it to Carl's Drive-In.

Known for its perfectly grilled burgers, crispy fries and legendary house-made root beer. Carl's has served generations of hungry travelers in a swetting that feels straight out of the 1950s. The neon sign, vintage carhop service and nostalgic interior have turned this diner into a living time capsule, earning it features in Route 66 guidebooks, TV specials and countless travelers' photo albums. Carl's Drive-In has won both the best cheeseburger in Missouri and the best chili in Missouri by the Kansas City Star at Eat This, Not That respectively.

Beyond Carl's, Brentwood's connection to the Mother Road is celebrated through its participation in regional Route 66 events, including classic car shows that bring enthusiasts and history buffs together. These gatherings help keep the town's Route 66 legacy alive, ensuring that both longtime fans and first-time visitors can experience the timeless culture of the Main Street of America.
