About Berwyn, Illinois: The City of Homes on Route 66

Founded in 1890 and incorporated as a city in 1908 after breaking off from Cicero Township, Berwyn grew along Ogden Avenue, once a plank road and stagecoach route. When U.S. Route 66 was designated in 1926, Ogden Avenue carried the new highway right through town.

Berwyn earned its nickname, the City of Homes, during a 1920s building boom. Strict building codes produced block upon block of well-built brick Chicago bungalows, and today the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Berwyn was once home to the Skylite Restaurant, formerly known as Bunyon's, a roadside diner that fed generations of travelers. Though its neon has gone dark, the city honors its highway heritage with the annual Berwyn Route 66 Car Show, which draws thousands of spectators for vintage autos, music and local pride.

Berwyn is also home to FitzGerald's Nightclub, a live music venue hosting Americana, jazz, blues and rock since 1980. In 2025 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Head west on Ogden and Route 66 continues to Lyons. Today, Berwyn remains a welcoming stop for anyone exploring Route 66 across Illinois.
