About Cicero, Illinois: Where Industry and Infamy Meet the Mother Road
Cicero, Illinois is a historic and vibrant suburb located just west of Chicago along Ogden Avenue and part of the original 1926-1977 alignment of the Mother Road. Founded in 1867, Cicero grew rapidly as a manufacturing hub, thanks to the massive Hawthorne Works Factory, which by the 1920s employed more than 40,000 local workers and ignited the town's economic boom.
Cicero is also linked with a more notorious chapter in American history: during Prohibition, Al Capone made Cicero his base of operations, running his gambling and bootlegging empire from the Hawthorne Inn. This colorful past has cemented Cicero's reputation as one of the most infamous stops along Route 66.
Cicero's most enduring Route 66 landmark is Henry's Drive-In, serving its famous Chicago-style hot dogs and crispy fries since 1950. Its iconic neon sign, a towering hot dog with fries, continues to grow brightly, calling travelers in for a bite.
Beyond Henry's, Cicero offers visitors a glimpse into its storied past with retro sights like the neon Cindy Lyn Motel sign and the towering spires of St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, a Neo-Gothic gem dating back to 1918. Together, these landmarks make Cicero an essential stop for anyone exploring the Mother Road's mix of history, grit and nostalgia.
