About Antares, Arizona: Quirk in the High Desert
Antares may be little more than a tiny burg along Route 66 between Kingman and Peach Springs, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in personality. Originally a modest ranching community, Antares has evolved into one of the highway's most unique and photogenic roadside stops for the Gram. The star attraction here is Giganticus Headicus: a colossal 14-foot-tall tiki-inspired concrete sculpture that's impossible to miss and the aesthetic is elite.
Created in 2004 by local artist Gregg Arnold, Giganticus Headicus looms over the desert like a surreal sentinel, its bright green hue and enigmatic expression inviting travelers to pull over and snap a photo. This whimsical monument isn't just a piece of art; however, it's a love letter to the golden age of roadside attractions, when giant fiberglass statues, oddball architecture, and quirky gimmicks enticed weary motorists to stop and explore.
Right next to the sculpture is the Antares Point Visitor Center and Gift Shop, housed in a former Route 66 café building at 9855 Rt 66. It serves as both a small museum and a welcoming pit stop, offering Route 66 memorabilia, handcrafted local goods, and conversation with folks who know the road's history inside and out.
Depending on the day, visitors might encounter live music, food vendors, seasonal events that transform this quiet stretch of desert into a lively gathering spot, or perhaps nothing but a quiet desert scene. At the time of this writing, the visitor center was temporarily closed.
Antares also boasts one of the longest continuous curves of Route 66, winding gently through the high desert and framed by sweeping mountain views. This scenic stretch, paired with the charm of its unconventional landmark, makes Antares a perfect example of why the Mother Road remains an enduring symbol of freedom and curiosity.
Whether you come for the aesthetics and vibes of the Giganticus Headicus or simply to stretch your legs under the Arizona sky, Antares proves that the best stops on Route 66 are often the ones that you are expecting the least from.
