About Afton, Oklahoma: Route 66's Corner of Legend
Afton sits on the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Ottawa County, where Historic Route 66 and US-60 meet in a town steeped in both industry and intrigue. Founded in 1886, Afton thrived as a hub for travelers, offering motels, diners, gas stations, and a thriving dairy industry that supplied much of northeastern Oklahoma.
Its most infamous landmark, Deadman's Corner, was a sharp, dangerous curve on the original 1926 alignment of Route 66. Over the decades, it gained its morbid nickname from repeated accidents and whispered local tales - some attributing it to a deadly 1930s wreck that left a lasting mark on the community's memory. While the curve has since been straightened, the legend remains, keeping Afton's darker roadside history alive.
Once a beloved stop for car enthusiasts, the Afton Station Packard Museum was housed in a beautifully restored 1930s DX gas station and featured an impressive collection of vintage Packard automobiles, Route 66 memorabilia, and artifacts celebrating Afton's place in the golden age of motoring.
Following the passing of owners Laurel Kane in 2016 and David Kane in 2018, the collection was sold and the station closed. Today, its legacy lives on through its preserved online presence, maintained by Grand Lake Web Designs as a tribute to this cherished piece of Route 66 history.
Annual Route 66 celebrations - supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association - bring the community together with classic car shows, live entertainment and guided tours, ensuring that both the lighthearted and legendary sides of Afton are shared with new generations of travelers.
Today, Afton stands as a blend of small-town hospitality and historic curiosity, a reminder that Route 66 is as much about the stories told along the way as it is about the miles traveled.
