About Narcissa, Oklahoma: The Town That Time Nearly Forgot
Narcissa lies on the 1926-1985 alignment of Route 66 in Ottawa County in Oklahoma, where the Ribbon Road, also known as the Sidewalk Highway, still survives. This unusual 9-foot-wide concrete stretch was built in 1922, four years before Route 66 was officially commissioned, and became part of the Mother Road's original alignment. Today, it's one of the few intact pieces of early highway still visible and a must-see for Route 66 history buffs.
The unincorporated community, with a population of just 154 (2010 Census), was named for Narcissa Chamberlain, the wife of an early settler. In its prime, Narcissa had a post office, a general store, and small businesses that served passing-through travelers. But as Route 66 was realigned and the traffic dwindled, much of the town faded into obscurity. Now what remains are a handful of homes, relics of its roadside past, and the enduring presence of the Ribbon Road.
Though small, Narcissa is closely tied to the cultural fabric of the region. Its proximity to larger towns like Afton and Miami ensures that its legacy continues to be included in annual Route 66 events and heritage tours, often supported by the Oklahoma Route 66 Association. For many travelers, walking or driving along the Ribbon Road feels like stepping back in time and is a reminder of just how narrow and rugged America's early highways could be.
Today, Narcissa stands as "almost a ghost town," a quiet stop that captures the fading echoes of Route 66's earliest days, making it an unforgettable waypoint for those who appreciate the road's history in its rawest form.
