About Zuzax, New Mexico: A Roadside Exclamation Point

Perched at 6,585 feet in the piñon-studded foothills 11 miles east of Albuquerque, Zuzax didn't evolve. Rather, it was invented. In 1956, entrepreneur Herman "Tink" Adams opened a hot-pink curio shop and christened it with a made-up word designed to do two things: guarantee the last listing in every phone book and top every "oddest places in America" list.

The gambit worked brilliantly. Motorists cruising old Route 66 (now NM 333) couldn't resist the lure of a place that sounded like a sneeze and looked like a Southwestern fever dream.

Roadside Attraction Gold

Families piled out of station wagons to browse moccasins and jackalope postcards, ride the novelty chair lift up the juniper-covered slope and snap photos beneath the giant Z-emblazoned sign.

Billboards for miles shouted Zuzax's alphabetical boast, pulling travelers off the two-lane for cold sodas, turquoise jewelry and one last tank of gas before tackling the steep climb through Tijeras Canyon into Albuquerque. For two decades, Zuzax was exactly what Route 66 promised—pure roadside whimsy with a business model.

The Name That Wouldn't Die

Though the trading post closed decades ago and suburban homes now carpet the foothills, Zuzax refuses to disappear. Exit 178 on Interstate 40 still flashes the name in bold green letters, earning curious smiles from coast-to-coast travelers as the Sandia Mountains rise ahead. It's proof that on the Mother Road, a clever name, a splash of pink paint, and shameless self-promotion could make a store become immortal, even if the place itself is now long gone.
