About Winslow, Arizona: Music, History and the Mother Road
Winslow, Arizona, a major hub in Northern Arizona, was founded in 1880 along the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. Its prime location in Navajo County ensured that when Route 66 was established in 1926, the town became one of the most popular and well-equipped stops for motorists traveling between Albuquerque and Flagstaff. Winslow even pioneered an innovative split-road system—one street for eastbound travelers and another for westbound—to easily manage the growing stream of Mother Road traffic.
Winslow's global fame today stems from the iconic line "Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona. Such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford, Slowing down to take a look at me" from The Eagles’ hit song "Take It Easy."
The town honors this musical legacy at the Standin' on the Corner Park, opened in 1999, which features a bronze statue, a large mural, and continuous photo opportunities that draw thousands of visitors annually. The musical spirit is amplified by the annual Standin' on the Corner Festival, supported by the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. For a quirky photo op near the park, see if you can spot the World's Smallest Church, located down the street from the park at 116 E. 2nd St.
Adding architectural glamour is the spectacular La Posada Hotel, a 1929 Fred Harvey masterpiece designed by famed architect Mary Colter. Lovingly restored, this luxury hotel and art gallery houses one of the town's most unique treasures: the World's Largest Navajo Rug (21 by 37 feet).
Beyond its musical and architectural highlights, Winslow offers "Plenty of Route 66 Sights." The Old Trails Museum offers deep insights into Native American culture, railroad expansion, and the town's evolution during the Route 66 years. Roadside gems include a restored cottage-style Phillips 66 station and the powerful Route 66 9/11 Memorial on the eastern edge of town, which incorporates actual steel from the World Trade Center. With its perfect mix of famous history and Mother Road hospitality, Winslow remains an unforgettable stop on the Main Street of America.
